What is discipline?

Discipline can be applied to someone else example a child or student in the classroom OR it can be applied to ones self (SELF-DISCIPLINE).

Self discipline is defined as “the ability to control yourself and to make yourself work hard or behave in a particular way without needing anyone else to tell you what to do”.

motivation first, discipline second

We’ve already defined discipline, so let’s talk about motivation. Motivation has two parts to it. The first is all about feeling. Motivation is a feeling or desire to do something. When you’re scrolling through your social media, and you see a fitness influencer with the body of your dreams, you might feel a sudden inspiration or willingness to go workout.

The second part of motivation includes your why or the reasons behind why you’ve set your personal goals. For example, you may be training at TNFC to achieve your dream physique or to feel good about yourself internally. This is all called INTRINSIC motivation.

Discipline, on the other hand, is action and it must be long term. It’s not just feeling motivated or remembering your why, it’s getting out there and doing it and repeating it. Motivation can be lost but discipline will keep you on track.

methods to build discipline

  1. Understand and Control your WHYS. Have them on your screensaver!. Put them where you can see them each day.

  2. Stop making excuses!. Plan your day and set yourself up for success so it cant fail. You have to always PLAN, PREPARE AND EVALUATE!. Sunday reset day is a good chance to do this for the week.

  3. Set realistic goals. This can include SMART goals to achieve your goal.

  4. Get yourself an accountability partner until you can do it own your own.
